A person with suspected learning problems should have a complete physical, including hearing tests, to rule out any conditions that may be confused with dyslexia.

After gathering information about the child, the specialist will give him or her a number of tests. These usually include an intelligence test that measures thinking abilities and a language test that checks the child’s ability to understand spoken and written language. A reading test will help the specialist figure out the child’s reading level and understanding of what he or she has read. Other useful tests may include a spelling test, a math test, a sequencing test (checking the ability to put things in the right order), and a test to understand directions, such as left and right, up and down. A self-esteem test that shows how the child feels about himself or herself may also be helpful.
